Connecting to Xbox Live via a USB Modem with AOL
I have a BT 105 Voyager USB Modem and wish to connect via AOL to Xbox Live on my laptop. I have a crossover ethernet cable and have tried what it says on Microsoft's connection page, but it won't have it!
Can someone tell me what to do from start to finish if at all possible.
I don't have a wireless network nor do I have a router, and believe this is the only way around it.
Any help would be great!
Thanks in advance,
Parky

re: Connecting to Xbox Live via a USB Modem with AOL
set up internet connection sharing (ics), plug your x box into your pc , because you have to pass your connection through your pc,
1 go to control pannel
2 internet connections
3 create new connection
4 press next
5 set up manually ,next
6 tick the connect to internet pppoe button, next
7 type 360 connection in the box
8 fill in boxes full aol user name, and password, as this will connect you when selected,
9 tick the box to create sort cut
10 properties, advanced, tick top 2 boxes, then ok
11 now try to connect, should work, as mine does with same gear and set up.

re: Connecting to Xbox Live via a USB Modem with AOL
Buy yourself a compatible modem router, cost around 40 quid from the shops netgear, linksys, zyxel microsoft seem to do the best. Dlink do too but not that many of them.
They are easy to setup with a quick setup guide. That should sort you out.
Good luck

I have the same problem i try to connect to Xbox Live via a USb modem BT voyager 105. it did not work it failed on the ip adress every time then i tried buying a router it sorted out the ip adress but did not sort out the DNS test i tried everything it did not work. so then i asked a guy in a local networking shop who then said that u need to buy something like a ethernet modem or something like that. He said it to fast for me to hear, i then asked can i get it with my USb modem he then said no beacause they are for standard use computers and i asked how much one of the modems he said was and he said £70 i did not buy one but i am looking to buy 1 on the internet now wich will probably be cheaper and hopefully it should solve the problem

Certain Broadband and Xbox Live (old or 360)
I hate to tell you guys. But from my experience at working for GAME there are a few things you need to know about certain broadband and Xbox Live.
USB modems (T-Mobile or 3) will never work with Xbox Live.
You need ethernet broadband.
I have AOL 9.0. It has been said it has problems trying to connect with Xbox Live.
You must remember these rules:
You must have a router compatible with AOL, preferably the one most people got free with AOL. Usually the Netgear one. Or Linksys.
If you didnt get a wireless router free. Maybe you got AOL before that was available. If you went and bought your OWN router. Without checking with AOL to see if it was fully compatible THAT is the reason you cannot connect to Xbox Live properly.
You must not use 'crossed' ethernet cables..only 'straight' ones.
And most importantly...if your AOL Silver for example only gets you speeds of 512kbps or barely 1mbps your Xbox Live will NOT function full anyway. That applies to any broadband that runs slow (maybe you are too far from your BT exchange for example).
Xbox Live NEEDS 1mbps and above to flourish.

If you connect using AOl the key is to get an ADSl router. Putting an ethernet cable from your xbox to your pc for a shared conection is not possible with aol due to its parental settings, however i know have a wireless router as my xbox is too far away for a cable and have not tried danny boys method.

If your on aol and you have the same promlem as T8RSP all's you need to do is get the ethernet cable plug one end into the ethernet port on your xbox 360 and the other end in to the ethernet port
built into the back of your pc, if you don't have one built in then i don't know what you can do but once it is connected go on your computer go on network places, then right click local area connection then click the advanced tab they click the first box saying share your internet connection.

re: Connecting to Xbox Live via a USB Modem with AOL
I have one of the "3" ZTE mobile broadband modem, and have been able to successfuly connect to xbox live.
These are the steps I've taken (mind you I'm on vista here):
Hook up the modem as you usually would through your laptop/pc and connect it to the net.
Connect an ethernet cable from your 360 to your compuer.
Go into the network and and sharing and click on the mobile broadband connection status.
Click on "properties"
Click the "sharing" tab and check off "allow other network users to connect though this computer's Internet connection" (don't forget to select Local Area Connection in the drop down menu) and hit OK.
You should now be able to connect to Xbox Live.
I've used this on both my PS3 and 360.
Now here's the problem, you can connect and download content from both gaming system BUT online play is trivial. I've not been able to find a way to change the connection from NAT type 3 to a 2 or 1 even.
If anyone has a solution to this, please do contribute.

re: Connecting to Xbox Live via a USB Modem with AOL
Okay, heres my problem. I am having similar problems to most of the other people. I have AOL broadband, a BT Voyger 105 modem, and BT voyager 190 ethernet modem. If I use the BT 190, Xbox live fails at DNS.If I use danny boy's solution, then it fails at ip address.
So my I have 3 questions to ask, with only ne needin to be answered:
1) Is there a solution to this problem with the equipment and ISP i currently have?
2) Is there a reliable ISP that works with the 360's live that offers unlimited 8mb boadband for £15 (as this is currently what AOL is offering me)?
3)Is there a cheap modem/ router that is compatible with both AOL and Xbox live that will sort the problem out?
Thanks in advance

re: Connecting to Xbox Live via a USB Modem with AOL
It is possible to connect to xbox live with a usb modem and you dont have to have a 1 mbps connection speed. I know some of the morons here say it isnt possible but it is because I am using it. They've never done it before so they speak out of ignorance. Set up your computer to use ICS, connect to your xbox with an ethernet cable (you must have an ethernet card installed in your computer), use static private IP addresses on the computer (should be default configuration when you enable ICS), and configure the xbox to use DHCP. Your computer will assign it an IP address.

re: Connecting to Xbox Live via a USB Modem with AOL
i got mine working on telus by opening up to show all connections and then opening up my local area connection into properties and then clicking internet protocol 4 (TCP/IPv4) then clicking use the following ip address and use the following dns address. then put in the following:
ip address: 192.168.0.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
then leave the rest blank then click ok then ok again. the connection (LAC) should restart on its own. then you should have your xbox and everything plugged in but keep the settings on your xbox on automatic for all of them. it would probably say for the first time you try to connect that it fails but retry the test and it should work. but also make sure that the connection status in the bottom right has the little blue bubble/mushroom looking thing lit up and when you scroll over it it should say your connected to your internet connection and you local area connection. enjoy

re: Connecting to Xbox Live via a USB Modem with AOL
well the best way to connect to xbox live on a usb modem from aol is to..
set up your connection on pc.
go to network connections.
you should see a connection called 'dialbb'
connect your xbox with one end of the etherenet cable to your xbox and one in the back of your pc.
now make sure you are not online when you are doing this on your pc.
highlight dialbb and local area connection 2 by holding ctl on the keyboard. next right click on dialbb with both highlighted and press bridge connections. this will take a few minuites.
once this is complete right click on dialbb go on the properties section. next go to networking and make sure tcp/ip box is selected. still with both highlighted go on lan same again and make sure its highleghted then test.

re: Connecting to Xbox Live via a USB Modem with AOL
contacted aol and they told me to do this for a 360.
Getting your Xbox 360 online with a USB modemIn order to configure an Xbox 360 and successfully connect to Xbox Live, a working and stable broadband connection is required. If you have not set up a broadband connection before attempting these steps or you are having problems with your broadband connection other than connecting to Xbox Live, please resolve these issues first.
A subscription to Xbox Live is also required. Consult your Xbox 360 documentation for details.
Physical connections
In order to successfully connect to Xbox Live when using a USB modem, the USB modem must be connected to a computer via a USB cable and the computer must be connected to the Xbox 360 using a network crossover cable (sometimes referred to as a system link cable).
The ethernet cable supplied with Xbox 360 Premium packs is not suitable for this setup and a crossover cable will need to be obtained from your local PC retail outlet.
The crossover cable will need to be connected to the network socket on the back of the Xbox 360 and to the network socket on the back of your computer. If your computer does not have a network adapter, contact your local PC retail store about getting one installed.
Turn off existing Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
1. Click Start, Control Panel and Switch to Classic View if it is present.
2. Double-click Network Connections, right-click the first network connection and click Properties.
3. Click the Advanced tab and ensure that Allow Other Network Users To Connect Through This Computer's Internet Connection is unticked.
4. Click OK.
Repeat steps 2-4 for all the network connections present.
Set up a DUN connection for the Xbox 360
1. Click Start, Control Panel and Switch to Classic View if it is present.
2. Double-click Network Connections, click Create a Network Connection on the left of the screen, then click Next.
3. Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
4. Select Set Up My Connection Manually and click Next.
5. Select Connect Using a Broadband Connection That Requires A User Name And Password and click Next.
6. Type a name for this connection and click Next. Something recognisable, such as Xbox, is recommended.
7. Enter your AOL screen name and password into the boxes and ensure that the options beneath the boxes are unticked. Click Next.
8. Tick Add A Shortcut To This Connection To My Desktop and click Finish.
Important information about entering your screen name and password
Share the DUN connection with your network card
1. Click Start, Control Panel and Switch to Classic View if it is present.
2. Double-click Network Connections. Locate the local area connection with Globespan USB modem (or the name of your broadband modem) written underneath it and note the name of the other local area connection (this will be your network card and the connection that the DUN connection created in the previous step must be shared to).
3. Right-click the Xbox connection and click Properties, then click the Advanced tab.
4. Tick Allow Other Network Users To Connect Through This Computer's Internet Connection and select the local area connection noted in the previous steps as the home networking connection to be shared to.
5. Click OK.
6. Double-click the Xbox connection and click Connect.
Connect to XBox Live
1. Turn on the console without a disk in the drive.
2. Navigate to the System blade/screen.
3. Move down to Network Settings.
4. Select Test Xbox Live Connection and press A.
5. Select Test Xbox Live and press A.
6. Select Yes and press A.
The Xbox will now run through its connection tests. If all the tests pass, the Xbox is now connected to the internet successfully. If the steps performed on your console fail, further support is provided by the manufacturer.
